The Great Twisted Layer Cake of Clarion

You're driving through what geologists call the transition zone, that magical strip where the high plateaus of central Utah begin their dramatic descent toward the basin and range country. Look at those hillsides around you. See how they're striped like a warped layer cake? Those aren't random bands of color. You're looking at approximately 150 million years of Earth's autobiography, tilted and twisted and laid bare by erosion.

Those reddish-brown layers dominating the lower slopes? That's the Arapien Shale, deposited about 170 million years ago during the Jurassic Period when this whole region sat at the bottom of a vast inland sea. But here's what makes the Arapien absolutely fascinating: it contains massive deposits of salt and gypsum, remnants of when that ancient sea repeatedly evaporated and refilled. That salt behaves like putty under pressure. It flows. It squeezes upward. It creates chaos in what should be orderly horizontal layers.

Above that, you'll catch glimpses of the Twist Gulch Formation and the Indianola Group, younger sediments laid down as the Sevier Mountains rose to the west around 100 million years ago. These are stream deposits, debris flows, the wreckage of those ancient mountains washed eastward and piled thousands of feet thick.

Now here's the drama you need to understand: about 60 million years ago, during the Laramide Orogeny, tremendous tectonic forces squeezed this entire region like an accordion. Mountains buckled upward. But beneath them, that thick layer of Arapien salt started moving, rising up through weaknesses in the overlying rock like toothpaste squeezed from a tube. Geologists call these salt diapirs, and they've created some of the most contorted, folded, jumbled geology in North America.
