The Railroad That Mapped the Stars

You're riding through one of the most unusual astronomical observation corridors in the American West. At seventy-five hundred feet and climbing, with Bortle Class 3 darkness along most of this route, this narrow gauge railroad has given astronomers something cars and highways can't: a slow, steady platform moving through vertical sky zones.

Right now, depending on the season, you're passing through some of the darkest sky between Denver and the Four Corners. Look north toward the San Juan peaks and you'll see why: no cities, no highways with sodium lights, just wilderness rising to fourteen thousand feet. The Milky Way here isn't a smudge, it's architectural. In summer, you can trace the Great Rift, that dark lane of dust clouds splitting our galaxy's bright core. In winter, the Pleiades hang over Engineer Mountain like a chandelier.

What makes this railroad special is that it hasn't changed its route or speed in over a hundred and forty years. That means astronomers have used it as a kind of moving baseline. In the 1960s and 70s, researchers from Fort Lewis College in Durango would book entire cars, riding up to Silverton with spectrometers and early light meters, measuring how atmospheric clarity changed with altitude. They discovered that for every thousand feet you climb, you lose about three percent of the atmosphere's interference. Between Durango and Silverton, you're gaining four thousand feet, which means significantly sharper views of planets and deep-sky objects.

There's a reason the San Juan Mountains became a haven for amateur astronomers in the late twentieth century. This train proved what the data suggested: elevation plus isolation equals exceptional seeing conditions. The Colorado Plateau Astronomy Club still runs night photography specials on this line during new moons, especially in August during the Perseids, when you can watch meteors streak above the Animas River gorge with no light pollution to wash them out.
