When the Ground Swallows Itself Whole
You're rolling through what looks like gentle, almost innocent country here near Frisbie. Low relief, subtle undulations, probably some old agricultural fields and patches of bottomland forest. The land sits just above sea level, part of that vast alluvial plain built by the Mississippi River over millions of years. But don't let the flatness fool you. Beneath your wheels lies a geological setup that's been causing trouble for as long as people have been trying to build things here.
What you're driving over is layer upon layer of unconsolidated sediment, mostly clay, silt, and sand deposited during the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs, the last two and a half million years or so. These sediments can be hundreds of feet thick in places. Underneath that, you've got older Tertiary deposits, clays and silts from ancient rivers and deltas, going back tens of millions of years. There's no bedrock anywhere close to the surface. This whole region sits on what geologists call the Gulf Coastal Plain, a massive wedge of sediment that's been pouring off the continent and filling the Gulf of Mexico basin since the dinosaurs walked the earth.
Now here's where it gets interesting, and a little unnerving. Those clays down below, especially the older Tertiary ones, they're what we call expansive soils. They swell when wet, shrink when dry. More importantly, some of them are prone to something called subsidence. When groundwater gets pumped out, or when natural drainage changes, these clays compact. The ground literally sinks. You won't feel an earthquake here, this isn't tectonic country, but you might wake up one morning to find your foundation cracked or your driveway tilted at an angle it wasn't yesterday.
And sinkholes, that's the real wildcard in terrain like this. Not the limestone cavern kind you get in Florida, but subsidence sinkholes. When those clays collapse or when old buried stream channels compact unevenly, the surface just drops. Sometimes slowly, sometimes overnight. Back in the 1980s and 90s, this part of Louisiana saw dozens of these features open up, some swallowing cars, undermining roads, tilting houses off their foundations. The earth here is patient but restless, still settling, still adjusting to its own weight. Keep your eyes on those field edges up ahead, sometimes you can spot the telltale depression where the ground is quietly giving way.
