The French Creek bridge itself became a small marvel: a three-span continuous steel girder design, 465 feet long, built to carry four lanes across a valley that floods spectacularly every spring. The construction crews worked through two winters, pouring concrete in heated enclosures. When it opened in 1964, it was considered routine work, just another bridge on just another highway.
