The Bridge That Tamed a Tidal River
You're right next to the Anacostia River, one of the most engineered, abused, and recently resurrected waterways in America. Now here's the bridge story that changed everything. In the 1950s, the Army Corps of Engineers straightened, dredged, and confined the Anacostia into a narrow channel. They built the Anacostia Freeway right along its bank and constructed a series of bridges to carry Southeast DC across to the Navy Yard and Capitol Hill. But the most consequential structure was the Benning Road Bridge and its companions, because they came with something invisible: a decision to channelize the river and fill in two thirds of its wetlands.
Those bridges essentially killed the river's ability to filter pollution and absorb floods. The Corps filled in over 1,800 acres of tidal marsh to create land for freeways, stadiums, and industrial sites. The Anacostia became a concrete ditch, one of the most polluted rivers in America. PCBs, heavy metals, and trash turned it into what locals called a disgrace.
But here's the twist: those same bridges are now being retrofitted as part of a massive restoration project. Engineers are literally undoing a century of mistakes, daylighting buried streams, removing concrete, and rebuilding marshes. The river is coming back to life.
